9.75" Hira Zukuri tanto with bo-hi
This blade is forged from all Japanese ore (tamahagane) and exhibits an extremely tight and refined mokume hada. Hamon is gunome midare with lots of hataraki. Bo-hi were cut by Josiah Boomershine, who made a beautiful copper habaki as well. This tanto would be a great dedication piece to commemorate a birth or wedding.

This is the original prototype for my new "Titan" fighter. I have already made several changes from this original design which makes the prototype a completely one of a kind piece. The blade is CPM30V with carbon fiber handle and Torx head take-down pins.

30" O-Kissaki, a study on the work of Minamoto Kiyomaro
Fresh out of Yake-ire. 30" O-kissaki with 4.5" kissaki and extremely active o-choji midare hamon. This blade is typical of Nambokucho period pieces with a wide mihaba balanced out by just the right amount of taper and a slightly diamond shaped cross sectional geometry. This particular blade was an attempt at mimicking the work of Minamoto Kiyomaro using modern steel and techniques.

"Dragon Rider's Sword"
For those of you who have been patiently waiting to see my new available contemporary pieces, here is a teaser. This one has been in the works for well over a year, the dragon guard and pommel alone took almost 6 months for carving and casting. The final wrap will be done in leather as shown but also includes two tri-colored mokume cabachons that will be centered on the hilt. Blade is 32" of L6 with a 17" handle.

Barrett Custom Knives Seminar 2010

Demonstrators: Chris Osborne, Kevin Cashen, Rick Barrett and possibly Enomoto Sadahito (not confirmed yet)
For this years event I plan to do a smelt, followed by forging the material into ko-gatana or small tanto, depending on the yield. Everyone who attends will be forging their own blade with help from the demonstrators and will go home with a blade.
This years focus will be the steps of making the blade from start, up to final shaping, although Chris will do some polishing demonstrations for those who want to go home and try polishing their own blade. This covers sorting and manipulating the ore from raw material up to folded billet, forging, initial shaping, heat treating and final shaping, yasurimei and signing your work.
Course cost is $750 and is limited to 7 people. The nearest airport is South Bend Regional and we will be able to provide transportation for those flying in. The nearest motel is the Essenhaus Inn and reservations can be made here, http://www.essenhaus.com/page/14/Inn---Conference-Center
